Internship Round 27
I feel like it was just yesterday that I, as a little intern, was blogging from my desk AlmaDDB's advertising agency office in Miami last summer, preparing to go to New York, and then returning to the agency once I came back (early) from the City. (Well, ok, Brooklyn.) But here I am, a year later blogging at Zubi Advertising, as an intern once again, blogging from another Hispanic agency, but this time, older and wiser (and by wiser I mean prettier).
Myself and eight other advertising peons are forming a campaign (for a product I can't mention) that should be completed in a total of eight weeks. We are halfway through with the internship and we still have not made it past step two. After countless verbal beatings from the higher beings, I have come to realize that 9 20-something year olds simply do not know how to check egos at the door and NOT take things personally. We fight everyday, which ends up slowing our process, but more importantly, entertaining the shit out of me. The fights are amazing. They usually come before lunch or towards the end of the day, because, as toddlers, we get cranky. We don't communicate, we don't listen, we take 3 steps forward then 4 steps back. It's quite funny, really, because I know in the end, somehow we will end up pulling this campaign off, but the path to that destination is a complete zig-zag clusterfuck waste of time. But hey! That's an what you get for putting 9 strong personalities together in a sandbox.

ouchie
I have to mention before this story, I have not been out to downtown in months. My life has been mellow, I've been productive, and everything is under control. Then I find out Ryan is coming to Miami for the weekend. OhFUCK.
Well it all started Thursday morning when I picked up Ryan and Parag at the FTL airport. We went immediately to some diner in lauds, ate a dank breakfast, and had our first round of drinks at 10am. We were "killing time," until some meeting (that never happened) so we decided to go to FTL beach for another couple rounds of mimosas. The boys finally admitted the meeting was never happening, so after hotboxing my car on i95, we took a short detour to Guitar Center, where Parag bought headphones, and Ryan and I made gangster beats on some machine. I have no idea how long we were in the store, but we were having so much fun that I almost didn't want to leave.
Then I remembered we were going to the Gansevort. Yeahhhh. Found a lucky parking spot (which I only mention because that's usually impossible anywhere on Collins Ave), and planted my ass on a lounge chair at the rooftop pool deck. Fast forward 4 Amstel Lights later, the boys come down, with company (Sean and Mike, the craziest kids I know), and we took the party upstairs, where a bottle of __________insert whatever we were drinking here________ and some Buds were passed around.
I was so retarded at that point that I made Paige talk me through the drive home, especially through the BK line for cheesy tots (which burn the shit out of your mouth if you're not patient) and some weird sandwich that I don't want to talk about consuming, as it will make me gag.
Crappy part of this awesome day was that Jonas really wanted to go out, and even after a shower and a solid fast food meal, I was in no shape to get out of his bed. So I was a party-pooper, big time. Oops.
Friday. What the hell happened Friday? I went to visit Jonas at work and he took me out on the Shake a Leg boat to see the islands he works on. We drank smoothies and hung out for a bit. It was pretty cool. And thennnn I went on my friend's boat and drank a bunch of vodka. That's all I can really say about that. Only because that's all I can gather together at this point. I somehow made it to Dakota's apartment in downtown. We drank more. I ate cuban french fries. Fast forward to about 11pm and we're at the Vagabond, drinking $1 PBRs, and just as I thought my night couldn't get any more retarded-- enter Ryan. Fuck. So they dj'ed.... I think..... And I ended up going back to the Gansevort with them, seeing 2 shifts of people come through the suite. I get overcome with exhaustion and decide it's time to go to bed so I made Parag let me sleep in his room, until I somehow end up going back out to the party....
Morning: an hour and a half of sleep because I told Jonas I'd watch his beach volleyball tournament in Hollywood. It's 8am and I am completely disoriented, and I almost killed Ryan in his sleep. I blame all this on him. I get my shit together, and realize 1 of my flipflops is stuck under the fold-out couchbedshit and I decide to ditch the shoes, and take a BAREFOOT walk of shame down into the swanky-ass lobby, down Collins Ave, to my car, where I have TWO parking tickets. WTF. So I may or may not have pulled myself over to vomit on the way to hollywood beach. May.
I got to the beach, felt pretty decent for a few hours, ate some pizza, then felt once again, like I was hit by a mack truck, so I sat in 90 minutes of traffic back to Miami. I ignored a total of 9 phone calls, and only texted a few people back because my motor skills were that of a wobbly toddler. The rest of the day was spent in bed. Sunday, too. There you have it.

Yesterday I went with my creators and brother to Stuart, FL to visit my dad's family and celebrate my cousin's almost-marriage to her fiance. In attendance were my 3 little cousins, 8,5,9months, my 98 year old great-grandfather, and 6 bottles of champagne. Good times. I was reminded of how much fun sidewalk chalk can be, and how jealous I am that little Ben drives a John Deer Tractor power-wheels.
AND THEN--- I got back to my phone and saw a bunch of text messages from JAELYN saying she doesn't care what I say, I need to OK some dates, she's flying me to Colorado. I thought about my response for a good 10 seconds, then realized that she was completely serious and really wanted to do it, so March 12-18th I will be with my best friend in Telluride!!!!!!!!
So I woke up this morning STOKED. I dreamt vivid dreams about Colorado, got some good rest, and was ready for my week. Then as SOON as I go downstairs, the chaos begins, and my morning is ruined. Sparing details, let's just say if I ever said I need to move out, multiply that by 1,000 and that's where I'm at now. I CAN'T WAIT TO GRADUATE, make enough money to move out, and REALLY live my life. MY OWNNNNNN LIFE.
Needless to say, I'm stoked as hell to escape for a week in Colorado, and the best part is, I'm only 10 days away from the trip! Deep breath, Lex, hang in there. Sorry, sometimes I talk to myself when I get frustrated. Don't care.

Fuck math. FUCK MATH! I've managed to get through college (almost) taking just ONE math course my freshman year. It's not that I'm bad at math, but I just really hate it. I've never liked it since I started learning fractions and decimals. Yeah, it didn't take long.
My advertising and spanish majors have managed to force me into classes that really center around writing. Except for this one class. Media Planning. I took this course, CAD388, my junior year, and got an acceptable C-. Whatever, it works for me. But apparently not for the School of Communication, which only counts a course if your grade is a C or better. Oops.
So here I am, 2nd semester senior year, re-taking this STUPID class that makes me want to pull my hair out. Reach, frequency, ratings, distribution, CPM, CRP, CPRP, Ad Cost, f%, f+%??!?!?! WHAT. THE. FUCK. I just got my first exam back... I got a 70%. C-. FUCK!!!!! If this class holds me back from graduating in 2 months.... !@$#^#$*%^(>V?C

Valentine's Day--uh-- PRESIDENT'S DAY weekend
I just had the best Valentine's weekend ever! Once again Jonas and I went to the Peace River, but this time, there were about 30 others in the group! Well, in actuality, we crashed THEIR trip. A group of these dudes have been doing this same President's Day weekend trip for 10, 12 years? (Can't remember the number...) And it was really different from last time, but definitely just as much fun. We woke up Saturday morning and were out the door by 5:30am to get on the road to Arcadia. Once we got there, 4 hours later, we fought the current paddling upstream for probably close to 5-6 hours so that we could find the perfect place to set up camp. Finally, we found a pretty good spot, and Jonas claimed a spot for us to set up camp "in the suburbs," which really means we wanted to set up our tent away from the chaos and noise of the other people. It ended up working out pretty well for the sleeping part, but I must have "commuted," back to get beers 1,000 times on Sunday. But hey, I slept like a baby away from the noise.
After we found our spot, Jonas decided he wanted to go across the river and explore the other side. I followed him. We went up the bank and what's the first thing Jonas sees? An armadillo! So he tells me they are REALLY blind, but have great hearing, and decides to sneak up on the thing and grab it by its tail. Of course, as soon as it flies out of his hand, it comes screaming towards ME, who takes off sprinting back down the bank into the river. Weirdest looking creature ever.
The first night was great. Jonas had caught a few fish and deep fried them for dinner. Uh, YUM! We got pretty drunk and fell asleep... the temperature dropped and I woke up FREEZING in the middle of the night, because we decided to bring ONE sleeping bag. But whatever, I woke up the next day ready to partyparty. Had some breakfast, cracked open a beer, and chilled ALL.DAY.LONG. It was great. We all pulled our chairs down into the river to drink and chill. The water was PERFECT and the weather was amazing. Jonas went fishing with John at one point, and I made some friends. Once Jonas got back, I figured out a nap would probably be a good idea considering my BAC in relation to the TOD (time of day?)
That last night was amazing. During my nap, the guys set up a HUGE bonfire... I'm talkin 15 feet tall!! -- AT LEAST! A few hours later, when I realized I couldn't hold my head up anymore, I gave up and went to sleep. And woke up feeling great (Jonas, not so much) and we made our way back to the Outpost, riding a tailwind and downstream current. I should probably mention that we took a break for lunch, and of course, I was the only one out of the entire group that almost steps on a fucking snake.... just my luck, right?
But a slurpee and some jelly bellies later, we were on our way back to Miami. The billboards changed from casinos and airboat rides to Diamonds and Patron. Yep, definitely back in Miami.

I did it!!! Sunday was the coolest most painful day of my life! I finished the half marathon in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 8 seconds (but who's counting?)! Whizzle, Monte, and Jonas (my adorable boyfriend) came to support me at 7 in the morning with signs, cameras and silly string. It was amazing to have friends there for a really special day. After the race I limped to the team tent, drank a mimosa with my buddies then slowwwwly made it to the car to go home. I held a 10 minute pace the whole 13.1 miles! I have never ran such a fast pace so my legs feel like I got run over by a truck--or perhaps fell off a motorcycle....
Which leads me to other news, that my dad got into a motorcycle accident a few Sundays ago. FUCK! He tore his tricep and shattered his tibia and fibula (ankle, for those of us who don't remember the biology test in which you had to label the bones in the human body). He already had one surgery and tomorrow is the second one to reconstruct the ankle YET AGAIN. I hate hospitals. Everything about them gives me the creeps, and I've been there every single day for 10 days now. I'M GOING INSANE.
To end on a good note, the weekend of my dad's accident (unbeknownst to me at the time) Jonas and I went camping on the Peace River in Arcadia, FL. It was absolutely relaxing and much-needed break from the stress Miami tends to give me. We drank a case of beer, an 18-pack, and a fifth of Jack. We smoked enough weed to impress even the smelliest hippies, and paddled around in our canoes fishing, finding fossils, and enjoying the UNBELIEVABLE WEATHER. The first night it dropped down to a ridiculous 30 degrees over night, and the days were cloudless and pretty much perfect. We had to paddle for a few hours against the wind on the last day, running on the tiny bit of booze we had left, and right before I started to get frustrated, I said, "You know, if this is the most stress in my life, life is pretty good." And just a few hours after that, I found out about my dad's accident. Ha! Nice timing.
What else... Classes started and I've officially graduated in my own mind considering my classes include Drawing, Acting, Health and Fitness, Breaking into the Ad Industry, and some stupid required b.s. ad class. School is going to be stupid-easy. Might quit the surf shop to work at the yoga studio I joined. Sounds a lot better to me. Started coaching my high school's varsity softball team with my former coach and friend, Joey, but I'm not sure I have the time to commit to it completely. Decisions coming up. Seems I've been making the right ones lately... Hopefully this trend will continue.

"Guido" (or "Gino") is a pejorative slang term for a younger lower class or working class Italian-American or Italian-Canadian male from the urban Northeastern United States or urban Central Canada, most often New York and the surrounding area due to the large number of Italian-Americans living in the area. The Guido stereotype is often portrayed as humorously thuggish and overtly macho attitude and an unyielding pride in his Italian ancestry.
In a wider sense (and not directly connected to the above term anymore) is the use of 'Guido' as a bouncer slang term for an obnoxious club-going male.[1]
The term is likely derived from the proper name Guido, and is used and recognized particularly around New York City, (especially Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, and Long Island), New Jersey, Connecticut, Baltimore, South Philadelphia, Boston (usually North End), Providence and various other cities due to the large Italian-American populations within these regions.
The stereotype is usually considered derogatory or an ethnic slur; however, it is, in many cases, used as a term for an Italian criminal in the Mafia in areas where Guido culture is common, much like the term "goombah." In fact, "goombah" and "Guido" have often been interchangeably. However, in recent years, the term "Guido" has been applied to a certain clothing style rather than just a person of Italian ancestry. Due to the emergence of this term, some people have been referred to as "Guido" despite the fact that they have no Italian ancestry.
Clothing associated with the stereotype includes gold chains, working class clothing such as plain T-shirts, muscle shirts or "guinea ts" (derived from the term "guinea," an ethnic slur for Italians), leather jackets, sweat or tracksuits, scally caps, unbuttoned dress shirts, and dress suits. Slicked-back hair or pompadours are a common stereotype, as are mustaches. Recently, heavily-gelled spiked hair has become a common stereotype. Monday Morning.
So things have been pretty awesome lately. As the lack of new posts shows, I have been pretty busy lately. Working a lot more shifts at the surf shop than usual, which I'm pretty happy about. Making my own money feels good, and not down to zeros (or more accurately, negatives) in my checking account is always a positive thing. Ha. Got some drama sorted out over there at the shop so now work has gone back to being pretty chill and the time passes way quicker when you're laughing for 90% of it.
Marathon update: I ran my fastest time yet for the 10-mile "long run," on Saturday, but after the previous Saturday of 16 miles, 10 doesn't seem "long," anymore. I never thought I'd be saying that! I am getting a bit sick of running the same course, and clearly waking up at 4:30am on Saturdays isn't always fun, but I can't believe the shape I've gotten myself into. Running brought me back to the real me, both physically and mentally, both of which were out of whack for way too long. Yoga has become my new stress-release instead of destroying my body, and I can totally see how people get so into it. Mind and body feeling pretty great at this point!
Quitting smoking: Not. Easy. I've slipped up a few times, especially when I have been drinking, but slowly getting there. Shit's rough! But I do notice a huge difference during my runs. Heart rate doesn't get out of control, even when I'm getting to hour #2.... Damn son.
Whit's finally back from her ski trip! Just saw her briefly before work. And Amanda moved back! Got my homies right around the corner now. Christian isn't too far either, but I haven't been to the new place yet.
Oh-- and I probably shouldn't leave out on the fact that I've been spending a lot of time with my intelligent, athletic, handsome boyfriend Jonas. I deserve him damnit! Makes me reallyyyy happy. Surfer from Melbourne Beach? Uh, yeah, perfect for me. I went up to visit him in Melbourne Beach a few weekends ago, had so much fun. It's such a chill beach town... I could get used to it up there. All we did was play beach volleyball, surf, drink, cook, and chill... It was great. Oh and we just planned a Canoe/Camping trip for MLK weekend in Arcadia, FL on the Peace River for 2 nights. I can't waittttt! Oh-- and that means I get to skip out on the final Saturday run before the race, mwahaha. So far we have 4 people in, hoping Whit and Monte decide to go.

Marathon update: I ran my fastest time yet for the 10-mile "long run," on Saturday, but after the previous Saturday of 16 miles, 10 doesn't seem "long," anymore. I never thought I'd be saying that! I am getting a bit sick of running the same course, and clearly waking up at 4:30am on Saturdays isn't always fun, but I can't believe the shape I've gotten myself into. Running brought me back to the real me, both physically and mentally, both of which were out of whack for way too long. Yoga has become my new stress-release instead of destroying my body, and I can totally see how people get so into it. Mind and body feeling pretty great at this point!
Quitting smoking: Not. Easy. I've slipped up a few times, especially when I have been drinking, but slowly getting there. Shit's rough! But I do notice a huge difference during my runs. Heart rate doesn't get out of control, even when I'm getting to hour #2.... Damn son.
Whit's finally back from her ski trip! Just saw her briefly before work. And Amanda moved back! Got my homies right around the corner now. Christian isn't too far either, but I haven't been to the new place yet.
Oh-- and I probably shouldn't leave out on the fact that I've been spending a lot of time with my intelligent, athletic, handsome boyfriend Jonas. I deserve him damnit! Makes me reallyyyy happy.
